In this bittersweet, often funny, period drama, Lena is a young Jewish woman who accepts a proposal of marriage by a camp worker to escape deportation to Nazi Germany. After the war, they settle in Lyon. Lena meets Madeleine, a charismatic artist. The two form a passionate friendship that offers the promise of escaping their mundane everyday life.
