Parmi ses ouvrages figurent Splendide Californie!, Chronicling the West for Harper’s, publié par University of Oklahoma Press, Jules Tavernier: Artist & Adventurer, Barbizon by the Pacific et French San Francisco.

French Eyes on the Gold Rush: Artists and Chroniclers Witness Early California's Astonishing Transformation

Long before the frenzy of the 1849 Gold Rush, French explorers such as the Comte de La Pérouse visited and charted the coast of California. They were followed by French diplomats in Monterey, notably Jacques-Antoine Moerenhout, whose official reports documented the early discovery of gold and the extraordinary changes it set in motion. Beginning in 1849, the Gold Rush brought a new wave of French emigrants to California, drawn by the dream of El Dorado.

These fortune seekers—who came to be known as “Argonauts,” after the adventurers of Greek mythology—did more than search for gold. A remarkable number of them observed, wrote, sketched, and recorded what they saw, aware that they were witnessing an extraordinary moment in history. Through travel accounts, letters, journals, and drawings, these French-speaking witnesses captured the unruly excitement of San Francisco, the hardships and disappointments of life in the mining camps, and the cultural encounters—and collisions—of a new cosmopolitan society taking shape almost overnight. Their distinctive perspective, shaped by European traditions, a critical eye, and a certain Romantic sensibility, complements the accounts of French diplomats and earlier explorers.

Together, these voices offer a vivid and surprisingly rich record of what California felt and looked like as it transformed almost overnight into one of the most dynamic places in the West.

Biography

Dr. Claudine Chalmers Claudine moved from her native Cannes, France, to California after graduate studies at the University of Nice. She developed a passion for the history of her adoptive Golden State and in particular for the adventures of the numerous and colorful French nationals who came to California looking for gold. Besides many books and articles, Claudine appeared on a French television show, Thalassa, and a French Canadian production on French pioneers in Los Angeles. Her art books became exhibits at the California Historical Society, the Crocker Art Museum, the Monterey Museum of Art, and at the Grace Hudson Museum in Ukiah. A traveling exhibit is now being shown in Colorado for that State's 150th celebration. She was knighted for her work by the French Ministry of Culture. She just finished an art book about French artist Jules Tavernier: Barbizon-by-the-Pacific, the Early Days of Monterey’s Bohemian Art Colony. She is now at work on the biography of Jean-Jacques Vioget, founding father of San Francisco a French Swiss pioneer who was central to the creation of Yerba Buena in the 1830s. Until her website claudinechalmers.com is complete, the list of her books and articles can be found on Academia.edu.
